I agree that Desmond is underrated. He is easy to dismiss because his whole approach was very subtle. You have to listen carefully to fully appreciate his approach to melodic and harmonic improvisation.
I have studied his solos for years and they have layers that any saxophone student can immerse themselves into.
I prefer his solo output to his work with Brubeck. I think Jim Hall was a more sensitive accompanist for Desmond that Brubeck. He really supported Desmond's beautiful lyrical style.
